"What Car" Magazine has named the BMW 3 Series was named as best sedan. However, Mazda scored a hat trick as the Mazda RX-8 picked up the trophy for "Best Coupé" for the third consecutive year. The same maker's Miata MX-5 also took the title of "Best Open-Top" car.
Describing the Mazda RX-8, the magazine said: "Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but it's an essential ingredient for an award-winning coupé, and it needs to be supported by strong performance and a rewarding chassis.
"It manages to do it all in a different way, too. Its 170kW engine is a rotary unit - the only one currently available to UK buyers. There's also a generous trim level including electrically adjustable leather seats, a CD changer and automatic air conditioning."
The magazine commented on the MX-5: "You can't beat the simple things in life and that's what Mazda stuck to with the simply brilliant MX-5.
"The latest model is longer and wider for improved comfort and safety, and the cabin is less utilitarian than its predecessor's, but the thrill-a-minute drive remains intact.
"The MX-5 boasts near-perfect weight distribution to deliver exquisite balance and phenomenal road-holding thanks to its low centre of gravity and classic front?engined, rear wheel-drive layout."
